HIEI for saxophone quartet was commissioned by the Parero saxophone quartet, composed on 25 March 2021 and premiered on 3 December 2021. Hiei means “scattered flowers”, and the work draws on traditional Japanese music, such as Sakura Sakura, in its search for the kind of Japanese music that can only be expressed by saxophones.


Masanori Enoki was born in 1991. He graduated from the Azabu High School in 2009. He studied composition at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, graduated in 2013. Later that year he moved to Paris, where he studied écriture and keyboard improvisation at the Paris Conservatory, graduated in 2018. In 2013, Masanori composed his first oratorio “Kōbakukibun”, based on the novel by Taruho Inagaki. He was invited to perform his composition for violin and piano “Take-Mon-You” at the music festival ARS MUSICA in Belgium in 2016.His music has been commissioned and performed by many leading pianists and ensembles. Since 2016 he has been working as a silent film accompanist at major film theaters in Paris such as the Fondation Jérôme-Seydoux Pathé, Forum des Images Cinémathèque Française. Furthermore he formed a music group “Karabako” with Hana Ohara, regularly playing theatrical music for voice and piano in a improvisational way.
